The 30th annual CIF State Cross Country Championships were held Nov. 26 at Woodward Park in Fresno. The event did not disappoint the over 10,000 spectators with impressive times and exciting finishes as 4 boys finished the 5000 meter race under 15 minutes and the top 10 girls all ran under 17:36. California continues to showcase some of the top runners in the country.

High School Cross country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain such as dirt or grass. The course, typically 5,000 meters (3.1 mi) long, may include surfaces of grass, and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes dirt road. It is both an individual and a team sport; runners are judged on individual times and teams by a points-scoring method. Both men and women at the High School level compete in cross country during the fall, and can include weather conditions of rain, sleet, snow or hail, and a wide range of temperatures.

Cross country requires tremendous training and preparation and the mental ability to fight pain and fatigue. There are no breaks, no subs, and no commercial breaks or time-outs. It is an all-out (20 minute or less) battle of braun and will power.
